Football Manager 2021 Player Roles Spreadsheet

Football Manager 2021 player roles spreadsheet

Analyze your squad or recruit the right players with JTaylor’s FM21 Spreadsheet

Spreadsheets have always been a great way to structurize all the information within Football Manager. Either you look to improve the squad by recruiting the right players for your tactics, looks to develop aspects of a player’s skills to fit a certain player role, or you want to use your star player in the most suited player role and duty, having an overview of the level of each player’s attributes is necessary.

Thanks to @jtaylor1409, who have given us permission to distribute his FM21 player roles spreadsheet to our audience, we’re able to hand you the best tool on the market to analyze your squad or find appropriate players for your tactics.

With this brilliant spreadsheet at your disposal, you’ll be able to get a better overview of your squad, whether it’s scouting for a replacement that fits your football philosophy or getting a better picture of individual player’s abilities relating to the squad’s.

Let’s take a deeper look at JTaylor’s FM21 Player Roles Spreadsheet, its features, and benefits!

Editor’s Pick

The Spreadsheet’s Features

The overall objective of the spreadsheet is to give you an insight into the positional abilities and strengths and weaknesses within your squad. There are mainly four different views to analyze players from; Individual Player Analysis (Dashboard), Squad Abilities and their comparison to players on your shortlist, Individual Player Comparison (Squad vs Transfer Targets) or Individual Player Analysis Scouting.

Broadly speaking, it enables you to either look at individual players and compare them to the average abilities within the squad or use it as a recruitment and scouting tool.

Another improvement to the spreadsheet for the latest update is that all player ratings are based on weighted attributes so will be an increased accuracy level behind them than in previous editions of the spreadsheet.

Below I’ll examine the different areas in more detail, before giving you the step-by-step guide on how to set the spreadsheet up for your own personal use.

Individual Player Analysis (Dashboard)

Individual player analysis - Spreadsheet dashboard

The Dashboard tab, or what I would call the individual player analysis might be the go-to place to get a better picture of his current abilities, both in terms of positional abilities, role suitability, and overall skills on the pitch. You can even use it to compare his skills to the club DNA which helps you to make decisions for the long-term plans of the player.

Apart from giving you an insight into areas of the game the player should improve – aiding you to make decisions on additional focuses and Position/Role/Duty to work on in Training – the breakdown of his positional abilities may give you insight into likely retraining opportunities.

For instance, you may wonder if a player is most suited to play in the DM or MC position, or whether his current abilities can play in the fullback position. Or, you might wonder if the player is best fitted for the Mezzala role or Advanced Playmaker.

By editing the role selected, you’ll get an easy interpretation of the important attributes for the role – just like you’ll have in FM, where you can highlight attributes (key and secondary attributes) for the role and duty.

NB! What the spreadsheet doesn’t take into account is the player’s preferred foot or his level of positional abilities (Natural, awkward, or ineffectual). Hopefully, this will come in a future update.

Current Squad Abilities

Current Squad Abilities - Player role Spreadsheet

In the event where you like to analyze your squad and their abilities, the Current Squad Abilities can be a valuable screen. Here you can assess all the players within the team. Their average ratings or score relating to passing, tackling, intelligence, club DNA or tactical knowledge, to name a few, can be not only be compared to the others within the team, but also to players on your shortlist.

It gives you a visual presentation of the player’s abilities which can be used to determine any future recruitment strategies. While the scores don’t take into account age, transfer cost, hidden attributes, personality or injury susceptibility, the ability to compare your squad according to the average values within each department can give you some eye-openers.

Perhaps you’ll discover that a member of your team is far from the score required to improve your team, or that he doesn’t fit the club DNA of yours. Perhaps you’ll discover that you got a player within the team that you haven’t put your faith in, and should earn a chance before heading to the Transfer market.

Scouting Tab

Scouting section | player roles spreadsheet

The new and improved FM21 Player Roles Spreadsheet features a scouting aspect that we haven’t seen before in any releases, and should in theory complete the requirements for this version at least.

Here you can load players within a Shortlist of yours to find players that fit your club DNA and playing style, discover their best positional abilities, how their attributes fit the selected player roles and duties within your tactics and use this as an additional tool to scout a huge range of players to discover who fits your tactics the most.

Similarly, you also got the ability to analyze every player within a shortlist individually. Apart from considering his overall positional abilities for every available role in Football Manager, you can view his best three positions and role.

Apart from positional ratings that may be valuable to discover opportunities for retraining the player, the breakdown of abilities and skills could be highly valuable to analyze his overall strengths and weaknesses. Here I’m specifically thinking about the score of Intelligence, Tactic ability or more specific attributes like Passing or Dribbling.

The spreadsheet also comes with a Ginga rating. It takes into account Technique, Dribbling, Flair, Acceleration, and Agility to enable you to discover creative players who can do the unexpected, like Neymar, Lionel Messi, and other players with that ‘something extra’ every squad needs to create chances and break through the opposition lines.

Player Comparison

Player Comparison - Scouting tab of spreadsheet

The last feature is the option to compare individual players within your squad and other players. It takes into account players you’ve imported to the spreadsheet from a shortlist of yours.

It’s perfect to use when you’re looking to replace an aging player or find a replacement for a player that has come to terms with another club.

How to Use the Player Role Spreadsheet? | Step by Step Guide

Step One

  • Download the two files: Profile View & Shortlist View
  • Place the files in:
    • PC: User > [Your User Name] > My Documents > Sports Interactive > Football Manager 2021 > views
    • MAC: /Users/[Your Mac Username]/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2021/views
    • LINUX: /home/documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2021/views

Step Two

Once you’ve downloaded the View files above and placed them in the correct location as per above, then you need to download the FM21 Player Roles Spreadsheet v1.52. You can store the file in any folder on your computer that you wish. So save it in a familiar place where you will be able to access it whenever you want.

Step Three

Now you’ve downloaded the view file in step one, you have correctly placed it in the required folder. You have also downloaded my Player Role Spreadsheet and saved that to your computer. Now you want to open Football Manager 2021 and navigate to your squad view.

import JT's profile View in Football Manager

Click the Selection Info drop-down and head to the highlighted menu area in the photo above. Click on JT Profile View and click ‘Load’.

You should get a message saying import successful and a screen full of stats.

Once you have this screen of player attributes for all players within the squad, you need to export the view in order to load it in the Excel Spreadsheet. There are two ways to print the screen:

  • 1. Locate ‘Print Screen’ in the main menu by clicking the FM icon.
  • 2. or press CTRL + P on your keyboard (at the same time)

Both methods will bring up this screen:

Football Manager print screen option

Save the file as Web Page, and then call it whatever you want and press Save. This will save the squad view file onto your computer at a location that you can easily find in the next step. Personally, I recommend saving it to the default Football Manager 2021 folder. It’s also the default export location for any Print Screens.

Step Four

The file you saved will be stored as an HTML file. Once you’ve located it double click on it. It will load up on your web browser like this:

print screen Jt profile view

In order to extract the information contained within the Web Page you need to highlight all the data (except the top heading of attributes and SIGames link at the bottom) then press CTRL + C or right-click on your mouse and click Copy.

Step Five

Now it’s time to load up the FM21 Player Roles spreadsheet you downloaded earlier.

At the bottom of the document, you will see two tabs, one for STATS and one for DASHBOARD. You want to access the STATS tab. I’ve purposely left the data of my players in there to give you an example of how it may look.

I have also left the Name (C2) in a different colour to the rest. This is where you will be pasting your data you copied just a moment ago.

Once you have done that you should have the whole stats area correctly. When this has been done you can head across to the DASHBOARD tab and begin looking at your squad.

You are now able to cycle between all the players in your squad, look at their abilities for each respective position and how their rating is in line with your DNA for your club.

Step Six

At the moment the DNA consists of player attributes that are most important to my football philosophy. By default you’ll have the spreadsheet calculating the DNA after First Touch, Passing, Tackling, Technique, Anticipation, Composure, Concentration, Decisions, Off The Ball, Work Rate, Acceleration, Stamina, but you can easily edit the CLUB DNA attributes according to your tactic and football philosophy.

For instance, you can simply click on Passing. This opens up a drop-down menu where you can select from any attribute within the game, from technical to physical attributes.

modifying the club dna spider web

If you don’t want to keep the same amount of DNA attributes (mine are 12) then you can just go ahead and change the values in the DNA column. For instance, unticking the 6 bottom attributes will modify the CLUB DNA web accordingly. 12 attributes are maximum, whilst 7 is the minimum without removing the ability to select roles within the Dashboard.

Step Seven – Scouting

To enable the comparison of players between players within your squad and possible signings you need to add all players of your interest in a shortlist. Before we can load the shortlist within the spreadsheet, you need to import the JT Shortlist View.

Once you’ve loaded the shortlist view you need to print the screen just like you did previously in Step Four. The only difference this time is that you will copy the shortlist file into the Shortlist tab.

This will then populate your shortlist area so you can do some scouting.

Step Eight

When you have filled the ‘Shortlist’ tab as you have above (takes 500 players at present) you can head across to the SCOUTING tab where you will find a very similar screen to the Dashboard. From here you will be able to take an in-depth look at your potential signings and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Not only this view but you can also compare your squad against the current potential signings in two areas. Firstly there is the ABILITIES tab which covers a variety of different areas.

From here you can compare each player for their areas of strength and weakness against the average from each list for that position and identify potential signings and areas to improve based on your tactical style.

There is also the COMPARISON tab where you can compare your player (on left) against a potential signing over on the right. Another really helpful tool to help with player recruitment.
